A path to community
Over the last year, Substack has become not only a place to grow my business and connect with fellow fermentors, but an unbridled insight into people’s homes, hearts and minds. It is a place of unfiltered news and opinions, tragedies and rays of hope. I find myself on an emotional rollercoaster each time I open my feed, pained by the imagery of starvation and war, elevated by stories of community triumph through connectivity. The lived human paradox of trying to find meaning amidst polarized and unbalanced forces.
Community, according to Merriam-Webster, is “a unified body of individuals”1. The notion of community is ever present in my life: the strong embrace of a circle of women, holding each other up; individuals protecting the rights of their community members; families housing and feeding one another. The search for community drives us home, taking us to unexpected places and momentous experiences along the way. It is why most of you are reading this now. Thank you for being part of my community.
To the Rogue Kale community members, I would like to introduce Adult Scouts 5280. My friend and Eagle Scout Charles started this group in the before times with the intention of teaching his peers valuable life skills, with a focus on self-sufficiency. After a long hiatus, we’re rebuilding this community in hopes to reach more than just our friend group. This month’s meeting is about fermentation in the home kitchen, hosted by yours truly. We want this offering to be accessible to all, so we are only asking participants to help cover our costs. You can follow this link to sign up. Future workshops to include survival skills, cooking, gardening, car maintenance/repair, finances, blacksmithing and much, much more. And if you have a skill you would like to share with your community, please reach out! We are looking for additional instructors to expand our minds.
As my journey with Rogue Kale continues, our community grows, feeding my mission and my heart. My upcoming rebellions this month reflect the direction I want to take, working with local organizations in order to empower my community through education and the power of fermentation. I know it sounds wishful and maybe even a bit delusional, but I believe that embracing fermentation has the ability to change the world. One jar of kraut, one lactobacillus, one fungus and a time.
